Income inequality refers to the phenomenon of large differences in income (income) earned by individuals and households.
The unequal distribution of income has various effects on the economy and society.
In recent years, globalization and technological innovation have led to a widening of income inequality worldwide, which has become an issue of concern.
Here, we have used AI to draw a caricature of such income inequality.Overview of Income Inequality
What is income inequality?
It is a state in which there is a difference in economic income such as wages and profits earned by citizens and households.
Economic inequality becomes apparent when the gap between high-income and low-income groups widens.
It is also called a “disparate society,” and there is concern that the gap between the rich and the poor will become fixed.Indicators of Income Inequality
The following indicators are often used to measure income inequality.Gini coefficient: A value between 0 and 1, with a value closer to 0 indicating equality and a value closer to 1 indicating inequality.
Generally, a Gini coefficient above 0.4 is considered “severe disparity.
Palma ratio: The ratio of the income of the top 10% to that of the bottom 40%, indicating the degree of inequality.
Relative poverty rate: The percentage of people earning less than half of the median income for the country as a whole.Causes of Income Inequality
Increasing income inequality is caused by a variety of economic and social factors.Economic Factors
Globalization
Globalization: The number of low- and middle-income workers in developed countries is decreasing as companies move their production bases overseas in search of cheap labor.
Wealth is concentrated in the hands of high-skilled workers, while the incomes of simple workers stagnate.Technological innovation (automation)
The development of AI and robotics will reduce the number of simple labor jobs, shrinking employment opportunities for low-skilled workers.
Income will be concentrated on those with advanced IT skills.Labor market polarization
The middle class is shrinking due to the high wages of high-level professional jobs and the increase in part-time and low-wage jobs.Uneven distribution of financial assets
Those with assets such as stocks and real estate will earn income from asset management, while those without such assets will have fewer opportunities to increase their income.Social Factors
Educational disparity
Differences in access to higher education lead to differences in future income.
Inequality of opportunity, where parents’ economic status affects their children’s education and career choices.Changes in employment status
Differences in treatment (wages and benefits) between regular and non-regular employees are a factor that widens the gap.
・Increase in the number of non-regular workers reduces income stability.Differences in tax and social security systems
Inadequate income redistribution systems (progressive taxation, social security) widen inequality.
Taxation systems that favor the wealthy may also contribute to inequality.Impact of Income Inequality
Widening income inequality has a variety of negative economic and social impacts.Economic Impacts
Sluggish consumption
Decrease in disposable income of low-income groups suppresses consumer spending and slows economic growth.Inhibition of social mobility
The poor will have less access to education and career advancement opportunities, and inequality will become entrenched.Political instability
Increased social dissatisfaction due to widening disparities leads to political conflicts and social unrest.Social Impact
Widening health disparities
Low-income groups have limited access to medical care and health care, resulting in differences in life expectancy and health status.Increased crime rates
More economically impoverished people will lead to social unrest and increased crime rates.Widening gaps in education
Burdened by the cost of education, children from low-income families have fewer opportunities to receive higher education.Solutions to Income Disparity
In order to correct income disparity, governments, businesses, and civil society must work together to take the following measures.Policy approaches
Tax reform
Strengthening of progressive taxation (higher taxation on higher income brackets)
・Rationalization of inheritance and asset taxesEnhancement of social security
Strengthen welfare and social security systems for low-income people (medical care, education, housing support, etc.)
Consider introduction of a basic income systemEqualize educational opportunities
Enhancement of free education and scholarship programs
Expand vocational training programsImprove the labor market
Raise minimum wage
Expansion of formal employment and improvement of compensation for informal employmentCorporate and individual initiatives
Promote diversity management
Provide opportunities for all by incorporating gender equality and diverse work styles.Support for skill development
Establishment of an environment where employees can learn while working (recurrent education)Promotion of social contribution activities
・Reward local communities through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activitiesIncome inequality is a major challenge to economic growth and social stability. Eliminating disparities requires a multifaceted approach that includes reviewing education, employment, and taxation systems. In particular, amidst technological advancement and globalization, there is a need to build a society in which all people have equal opportunities for growth.
Future Challenges
Achieving both sustainable economic growth and reducing inequality
Creation of new jobs for the digital age
Realization of equal opportunities through social solidarity
